Pug Prop Spotted in Movie
This pic is from the classic movie Gone With The Wind. It's the scene where Scarlett has taken over the lumber yard and her current husband Frank is scolding her about how she runs the business.
Notice the pug head prop.
This is an example of excellent scene dressing - pugs were exceptionally popular during the Victorian age and you can find pugs adorning all sorts of items, from pickle jars to inkwells.
This was not solely because of pug-loving people. Pugs were seen as a symbolic shorthand for status.
Anyone who had pretensions to being rich and classy would definitely have a pug on their office desk.

Tony Curtis and Pugs
This is my absolute favorite Tony Curtis movie. It's a classic, with adventure and laughs and romance and ... pugs!
Unfortunately, Tony Curtis doesn't get to interact with the pugs - that job fell to Jack Lemmon. And it is hysterical. Those pugs completely steal the scenes they're in, and some of Lemmon's grumbling comments have the quality of ad libs. It's like he can feel the scene getting away from him.
A classic movie of a type they just don't make anymore. Go watch it!

Laundry Pug Spotted in Ad
This is from an old magazine advertisement for the Kenmore Elite HE3t.
And who is the star of clean living but a PUG!
Because if you're a person concerned with being green who has the disposable income to purchase a high efficiency washer (the current HE5t is something like $1600), the expensive, high-maintenance pug is probably the dog for you. :)

Pugs Are Everywhere
One of the points I make in my book PugSpotting is that pug owners like to involve pugs in everything they do.
If you can put a pug in it, pug owners are there and have done it.
If you can put a pug in it, pug owners are there and have done it.
Random insertions of pugs in books and artwork? Check.
Pugs on utensils, inkwells, match holders, cigarette cases, and finials? Check.
Pug-shaped teapots, pounce pots, and salt-and-pepper shakers? Check.
If you can take your pug with you, pug owners have done that, too. And not just out for a walk or to a restaurant.
Pugs exploring the Old West? Check.
Pugs circumnavigating the globe? Check.
Pugs going to staff an embassy in Afghanistan. Check.
Yes, you read that correctly.
In 1879, Maj. Sir Pierre Louis Napoleon Cavagnari, K.C.B. C.I.E., Bengal Staff Corps, brought his pug with him to staff the Kabul Embassy.
Since this was during the 3rd Afghan War, you might perhaps think this was not the most secure place to take a pug. And you would be right. The Kabul Mission was massacred down to the last man - and there had been about 100 of them.
The sole survivor of the massacre was Cavagnari's pug.
The British would re-enter Kabul, of course, and the resourceful little pug was rescued and sent home to Lady Cavagnari. Amazing, right? True story.
This holiday season, I wish you all the luck of Cavagnari's pug. :)
